Somewhere in the midst of the crowd was a student who hated her guts.
He wondered what made her smile excitedly as she addressed the assembly on ‘Discovering Life’s Purpose.’
He could hear his classmates sitting around him muttering words in agreement to all she was saying. He wondered what was so special about this “Miss” Bridgets to have won or rather, “stolen” the hearts of more than half of his set mates. They never hesitated to say nice things about her, up to the point of literally defending her if anyone dared try defame her.
He recently had a fall out with his best friend who prior to that time, always joined him in teasing teachers. “All I did was mumble a little something that’s not a big deal,” he thought and Segun just took offence like that, didn’t even laugh, just gave me a scary, grave look and said, “Jude, for once, please be reasonable”. Imagine that!!
That was the end of their friendship. After the class, his class mate, Ruth briskly walked up to him and asked him why he made such a rude remark about Miss Bridgets when she was one of the coolest teachers in the school.
He was irritated and responded “what I do or say is no one’s business, but since you asked, I think she is a fake, acting like she can fix us all, I hate her” Ruth’s eyes widened. She was stunned. “Haba Segun!” She quipped. Have you ever spoken her or even greeted her to make you fly to such conclusion?”
“I don’t want to have anything to do with her,” he said. “I hate her I have never spoken to her and never intend to.” Ruth looked at Segun with pity in his eyes. She realised the problem was with Him and no one else. “It’s such a shame that you are fuming over someone whose existence is devoid of your input. She cannot impact everyone’s life, and certainly not yours if you continue to view her as an enemy”. She turned to leave and added, “a word of advice Segun, hating Miss Bridget won’t make you feel any better, it only shows you’re insecure. Whatever problem you have isn’t hers, its yours.
The truth about life is, no matter how hard you try or how good you are, there are just some people who will never appreciate you. They will never be able to see past their noses at how brilliant you are. Some will develop an unkind hatred for you for no reason. They will look for ways to slander you and force their perception of you on others. And no, the problem is not with you, it’s a matter of choice. People have the free will to choose how they will react and respond to others. So next time you hear an unkind remark about you, not to worry, hold your head up high and continue being all you have been called to, because, when people say mean things about you, they do not define you, but themselves. God bless you.
